These symbols can be used as a tool to position your text or subtext. If you want to do more than position the text in Outline view, the Outline tools can help. You can change the position of the heading and subtext similar to dragging the symbols. You can also view your document several ways using the various view buttons. The Outline tools are available on the Outlining tab anytime you view your document in Outline view.

On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Text Effect. Click the effect that you want. For more choices, point to Outline, Shadow, Reflection, or Glow, and then click the effect that you want to add. Writers use outlines when writing their papers in order to know which topic to cover in what order. Print Layout view in Word In Print Layout view, you get to see the entire page, just as it prints. Graphical images, columns, and all sorts of other fancy items show up on the page fully visible.
As the name implies, it identifies all the little mini-topics that your paper will comprise, and shows how they relate. Outline in Word means seeing just the headings of a long document. That is if you are using styles which makes this all possible. You still have the paragraphs that are part of each heading but you have hidden them for the time being.
